River Safety Week is a community collaboration between partner agencies working together in both Kern County and Sequoia National Forest to achieve one goal, saving lives! Applying digital and social media campaigns, we hope to reach the tens of thousand of visitors of Lake Isabella and the Kern River to promote responsible river recreation. Our new slogan, #justwearit encourages lake and river visitors to wear a PFD (personal flotation device) when entering the Kern River and Lake Isabella. River Safety week begins the last week of April and into May.

River Safety Week consists of several educational segments:

  • How to wear a correct sized PFD

  • How to identify water hazards and conditions

  • Knowledge of situational awareness and wilderness settings such as slippery rocks and surfaces

  • Self rescue if you find yourself in the water

  • Utilizing trained and professional whitewater outfitters

  • The dangers of pool toys in whitewater

  • Hypothermia
